Michiel Christiaan (Giel) Bekker, PhD, Pr.Eng
Giel is currently a Senior Lecturer in project and quality management at the Graduate School of Technology Management at the University of Pretoria. He is a leader in Project Management training. Tuition is primarily focused on the MBA and MPM (Masters in Project Management) level as well as various short courses to specific clients and institutions like Eskom, ABSA, Dept of Water Affairs, Denel, Habitat for Humanities, MTN, Xstrata, Komatiland, etc. The APPM (Advanced Programme in Project Management) was developed under his leadership and is offered as a year programme at NQF Level 7.
Apart from lecturing Giel also consults and contract project management services to industry through his own company ProjectWay Consulting and Contracting. Clients include Eskom, Denel, ABSA, AVMIN, Kumba Resources, Sasol, Deloitte Consulting, National Parks, MTN, Xstrata Coal, Mintails, TCTA, etc. Before joining the University of Pretoria, and establishing his company, Giel was employed for more than 10 years by Sasol Technologies, a petrochemical company. His duties included the mechanical design of chemical, water purification and petrochemical equipment and facilities. His career soon progressed into project and construction management and also spent one year (1992) in Munich, Germany developing a new petrochemical plant. Before leaving Sasol in July 2000 he managed a department of 20 project managers with a total project portfolio budget of USD 500million.
During 1996 Giel established the Mpumalanga Branch of the Project Management Institute of South Africa (PMISA) and served as president for two years. During that time he also acted as guest lecturer in project management at the universities of Witwatersrand, Potchefstroom and Vaal Triangle Technicon.
Giel’s education includes a B.Eng (Mechanical) from the University of Pretoria, M.Eng (Mechanical) from RAU, a MBA from the University of Stellenbosch and PhD from the University of Pretoria. His research interests include project management capacity modeling, organizational aspects of project management, methodology development, project governance and quality improvement. He authored / co-authored numerous articles and has supervised more than 50 Masters students between 2000 and 2008 in the field of project and quality management. Giel also presented various international lectures and papers in the UK, China, Alaska, OregonUSA, ShanghaiChina, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia and Nigeria. He his also a certified Professional Engineer. In 2003 he received the Project Management Excellence award from PMSA for outstanding performance in the field of project management and execution.
He is married with two boys and enjoys sport, camping and hunting. A single handicap golfer he is also chairman of the University of Pretoria’s Golf Club.
