Project management training courses – credibility and accreditation

A qualification is worth only as much as the credibility of university or other institute that awards the qualification or that accredits the qualification. It is therefore important to verify the status of the organization that offers a project management course and its accreditation before investing in any such training.

Universities as a whole are rated internationally and the University of Pretoria is proud to be listed as one of the 500 top universities in the world. See for example the following website that lists 12 000 or more universities:

While the University of Pretoria as a whole is typically in the top two or three positions of South African universities, certain schools and faculties are undisputedly in the first position nationally, as is the case with the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Engineering.

The Graduate School of Engineering and Technology Management  (GSTM) is the undisputed leader in project management training and education in South Africa: It offers the only project management master’s degree course on the African Continent that is accredited by the GAC (Global Accreditation Center) of the Project Management Institute (USA).  It is furthermore the South African school with by far the most advanced, comprehensive and internationally recognized project management research outputs.  The lecturers teaching on this training programme are to a large extent the same as those that teach the exclusive GAC-accredited master’s programme and that perform the internationally recognized research in project management. Unlike the project management degree courses however, the PPM is a project management skills training course that focuses more on skills development and less on theory, hence its direct applicability to development of workplace skills. It however draws on the content and research base of the formal project management degree courses. The project management research and industry involvement of the GSTM therefore ensures that the course content remains state of the art.

The GSTM is accredited by the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and also hosts the South African Chapter of the international Construction Industry Institute (CII).

The PPM, like all other project management courses presented by the GSTM, are well recognized nationally and internationally: The GSTM is a Registered Education Provider of the Project Management Institute (USA) and is a Platinum Status Registered Education and Training Provider of PMSA (Project Management SA).

Individuals registered with ECSA (Engineering Council of SA) earn CPD points when enrolled on the Programme in Project Management (PPM) and on the advanced project management course that can be done upon completion of the PPM.

Delegates who successfully complete the PPM and comply with the related assessment criteria are awarded by the University of Pretoria (at a certificate ceremony) certificates of successful completion. In addition to the certificate, the PPM is recognized by the following:

  • PMI (Project Management Institute) – USA
  • ECSA (Engineering Council of SA)
  • SACPCMP (South African Council for the Project and Construction. Management Professions)
  • PMSA (Project Management South Africa)
