Dr Taryn Jane Bond-Barnard

Taryn is a project manager and industrial engineer who is currently pursuing her academic interests.


Taryn worked as an industrial engineer, operations manager and project manager in the 8 years before joining the University of Pretoria in 2015. During this time she assumed responsibility for several engineering and business process improvement projects and also for the operations management of an established, boutique contact centre company.


Research and Publications

Taryn joined the University of Pretoria as senior lecturer, in June 2015. Her research interests include project communication management, computer-mediated communication in projects, agile project management, and project procurement.

Taryn has published widely in both national and international journals (most notably in the International Journal of Project Management). She has also presented papers at national and international conferences.

Taryn frequently reviews papers for the following journals: International Journal of Project Management, International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management and Acta Structilia.

She was the study leader for one and eternal examiner for six masters-level dissertations that have been successfully completed. She is currently the co-supervisor for one PhD, and study leader for 8 master’s dissertations in project management.

Before joining UP, Taryn was also an external examiner for several project management subjects at both honours and masters level.


Taryn teaches procurement management as part of the only master’s programme on the African Continent that is accredited by the GAC (Global Accreditation Center) of the PMI (Project Management Institute).

She has also been teaching project management at honours level, since 2014.

Taryn developed and teaches a Project Management Professional (PMP) Examination Preparation Workshop. She also teaches the procurement and contract management module for the programme in project management (PPM see http://www.projectmanagementsa.co.za). Both these courses are offered through UP Enterprises.

Qualifications and Affiliations

BEng Industrial Engineering (cum laude), MEng Project Management (cum laude) and a PhD in Project Management, all from the University of Pretoria.

Taryn is certified as a Project Management Professional with the PMI (since June 2012). She is a PRINCE2 Practitioner, Golden Key member and is registered as a professional engineer with ECSA.

Taryn is married to Theunis and has two sons, Vaughan and Ethan.
