Reniel is Projects Director at ProjectWay Consulting and Contracting. His is involved the management of a portfolio of projects for various clients, either directly or with a team of project managers and engineers. Clients have included Daimler AG, Rift Valley Holdings, Glencore, Mintails, Harmony Gold, MTN, Anglo American, ABSA (via Richmark) and Eskom.

Completed projects include motor manufacturing Infrastructure, mine development, water management, conveyor systems, mine ventilation, rehabilitation, retail banking infrastructure refurbishment, game farm tourism development, rural electrification, process plants and support infrastructure, as well as the development of customized project management methodologies.

Recent projects include:

  • The construction of infrastructure for a new paintshop facility, the upgrade of infrastructure of an existing paint shop and the detail engineering of a new bodyshop for Mercedes Benz South Africa
  • the establishment of a tea blending plant in Tanzania for Rift Valley Holdings, a major player in agri-industrial development in Africa;
  • the implementation of a retail banking retrofit for ABSA, one of the major banks in South Africa, and
  • the development and construction of game lodge accommodation in Limpopo
  • mine development, water management, conveyors, and rehabilitation for Xstrata Coal South Africa (later known as Glencore Coal SA)

In addition to the management of projects from concept to closure, he also compiles and analyses stand alone financial models for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies. He has been, since 2007, a frequent guest lecturer for Enterprises at the University of Pretoria and has lectured on project management in Africa and Asia to companies such as MTN, Glencore, Xstrata, Eskom and local government. He has also developed and presented a course in MS Projects, which is often presented as supplementary to the project management course.  

Prior to joining ProjectWay, Reniel practiced as a consulting civil engineer for 7 years in a civil engineering consulting firm, with Sasol as primary client. During this time he was an active member of the South African Institute for Civil Engineers (SAICE) and served as chairman of the Highveld branch in 2002.  Having started his career in Eskom he was involved in engineering design, construction supervision, contracts management and project management.

Reniel is registered as a professional civil engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) accreditation with the Project Management Institute (PMI). He completed his B Eng in civil engineering at the University of Stellenbosch in 1989 and a Management Development Programme at Unisa in 1994. Other academic interests are financial management and economics.

  3. SACPCMP (South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions)
  4. SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professionals)
  5. PMSA (Project Management South Africa)

On successful completion of the PPM, suitable candidates may be eligible to apply for the professional designation of Project Manager (PM) conferred by Project Management South Africa (PMSA). PMSA is the SAQA recognized professional body representing the interests of project managers across sectors.
