The Online Course in Project Management is offered by the Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM), in collaboration with Enterprises University of Pretoria (EUP). GSTM is widely recognised as Africa’s leading institution for project management education, research, and professional development.
This course is the online version of the renowned Programme in Project Management (PPM) — a qualification that has empowered thousands of professionals since its inception in 1997. It has been offered fully online since 2020, providing flexible and accessible learning for individuals across industries and geographies. The curriculum is regularly updated to reflect the latest industry practices, tools, and methodologies.
The course is developed and presented by the same expert lecturers who teach Africa’s only master’s programme in project management accredited by the Global Accreditation Center (GAC) of the Project Management Institute (PMI). Their academic insight and industry experience make each pre-recorded session practical, engaging, and highly relevant.
In addition, the course is endorsed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) — the world’s leading professional body for project management. Completing this online course can serve as a valuable foundation for earning internationally recognised PMI certifications.

In an April 2024 survey, students who attended the PPM Online were asked to respond (for each module) to the statement I found the module of great value. The average of the 8 modules was that 96% of the students agreed or strongly agreed to the statement.
For individuals who wish to begin with the fundamentals before committing to the full programme, the first module—Project Management Principles, Practices and Scheduling—is available as a stand-alone short course. Accredited as Module 1 of the Online Programme in Project Management (PPM), it offers an ideal starting point for those new to the field or looking for an introductory overview.
The admission criteria are there to protect you, the applicant. The purpose is to ensure that people who enroll don’t take too high a risk of not being able to finish a course successfully.
Our project management courses are not challenging but require English language proficiency and basic numeracy to deal with some basic calculations and interpret relatively simple graphs. People with a Grade 12 qualification that includes a subject such as Accounting or Mathematics – or an equivalent qualification – should not experience any difficulty related to numeracy.
Please note that we recognize prior learning, and if you are unsure whether or not you should enroll, we require a CV that includes information about your highest school qualification – subjects taken and results per subject – all courses taken after school, and relevant work experience.
PPM Online option
Applicants should preferably have a tertiary qualification. Applicants who do not have a degree or equivalent qualification that ensures numeracy should please provide a CV for admission purposes.
Applicants must note that studying online requires the discipline to work consistently and diligently on one’s own. People who prefer to instead participate in person, during set days in Pretoria – face-to-face with lecturers and peer groups, can consider the Weekend and Midweek options as alternatives to this online option.

To ensure that cash flow doesn’t hinder your education, we offer flexible payment options to support you in pursuing your studies.
To secure your seat on a course, full payment of the course fee must be received. We offer the option to pay off the course fee, but the entire balance must be received at least 14 days before the course starts.
If a client cannot make full payment some time before a course starts, options exists at Mobicred or Fundi to grant a loan to the client and make the full payment to EUP on behalf of the client. The client then pays back the fee in monthly instalments to the organization that granted the loan.

While some project management software is demonstrated during lectures to illustrate concepts, the Programme in Project Management does not include hands-on computer training.
Our project management training takes a unique and practical approach to skill development, ensuring real-world application and effectiveness. Each candidate participates in hands-on assignments, crafting project plans tailored to their workplace context, fostering immediate implementation and learning.
Facilitation is a key aspect, drawing on the expertise of at least eight lecturers from diverse backgrounds, including Engineering, Law, Industrial Psychology, and Finance. These seasoned professionals possess both practical experience and exceptional academic credentials, enriching the learning process with valuable insights from various perspectives.
The training goes beyond one-size-fits-all approaches. Practical work takes place in the learners' workplaces, allowing for customization and relevance to individual work environments. While some projects may be used as examples, the emphasis is always on adapting the training to suit each candidate's unique circumstances.
Our Programme in Project Management Online (PPM) is open to individuals from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. We offer training in generic project management principles, not limited to specific fields like Engineering, IT, or Construction. This inclusive approach ensures that our graduates are equipped to excel in any industry or domain.
Upon enrolment into the Programme in Project Management (PPM) Online, access is provided to the university’s online platform. All material is provided, including a textbook that is sent by courier to each participant (all costs are included in the course fee).

The work to be done by the participant includes viewing of lectures as videos provided via the Internet (more than 8 hours of videoing time), reading more than 100 pages from the textbook, answering some basic questions about the material, and develop a basic project plan as an assignment (preferably in the participant’s workplace). This assignment has to be submitted within three months of enrolment.
Each module has its own assessment. Assessment is mainly by means of practical assignments (group assignments and especially individual assignments) although the writing of a limited number of tests is sometimes also required. The last module integrates the work done in the previous 7 modules and assessment is again in the form of practical assignments – there is no other final examination.
The PPM Online course does not include traditional tests or exams. Instead, each module has a practical assignment that you must successfully complete to finish the course. All assignments are submitted online.
Except for the first module, which can be enrolled for as a short course, all seven remaining modules in the programme are done as a combined unit, and you cannot complete these as stand-alone courses. This applies to all the different PPM presentation modes; however Enterprises at University of Pretoria do offer courses similar to the individual modules as stand- alone short courses.
The online course runs on a learning management system, Blackboard Learn.
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is a certificate offered by the American Project Management Institute (PMI). The University of Pretoria is registered at the American Project Management Institute (PMI). All project management qualifications are recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The Programme in Project Management (PPM) gives background on the Project Management Professional (PMP) examination. You need a certain amount of Professional Development Units (PDU's) that can be obtained through the Programme in Project Management (PPM) course.
The Project Management Professional Exam Preparation (PMP®) short course prepares you to write the international PMP® certification exam. It is presented by the Graduate School of Technology Management, University of Pretoria. Further relevant qualifications to study after the PPM include an Advanced Diploma in project management and, for graduates, a Post-Graduate Diploma (PGDip) in project management. Engineers and people qualified in physical sciences can consider the University of Pretoria's Master's in Project Management (MPM).
The Programme in Project Management is a certificate course offered through Enterprises at the University of Pretoria. While it does not carry an official NQF Level designation, it is widely recognised by local and international bodies like PMI, ECSA, SACPCMP, and SACNASP, and provides CPD points.
