Mr Riaan Jansen

Mr Riaan Jansen is a Lecturer in the Department of Construction Economics at the University of Pretoria, where he has been a full-time academic since 2003.

He holds a BSc in Construction Management, a BCom in Financial Management and an MSc in Project Management from the University of Pretoria. He has also completed a Certificate Course in Property Administration.

His professional experience spans the construction, property, project management and financial services sectors. He entered the construction and property industry while completing his studies and gained practical experience in project management and coordination, quantity surveying, site supervision and tender administration across a range of construction and property development projects.

He subsequently worked in construction management before joining ABSA, where he gained experience in property portfolio management, project management and business process improvement.

Since joining the University of Pretoria, Mr Jansen has taught across undergraduate, honours and master’s programmes and has been involved in curriculum development in selected areas. His teaching experience covers areas including construction project management, practice management, property financial mathematics, property law, facilities management and construction equipment.

He is also extensively involved in professional short-course education. He serves as the Programme Leader for the Comprehensive Project Management Programme for Built Environment Practitioners, covering the following courses: project estimation and procurement, construction contracts, project quality, risk and time management, and human resource, communication and scope management. He also presents on the University of Pretoria’s Programme in Project Management (PPM) and other professional development programmes.

Alongside his academic career, Mr Jansen has remained actively involved in practical construction, property development and facility management projects. This combination of academic knowledge and hands-on industry experience enables him to bring a strong practical perspective to project management education.

His academic interests include construction innovation, alternative building technologies, and teaching and learning innovation. He has contributed to research and conference papers in these areas and has supervised research at honours and master’s level.

Mr Jansen has received several University of Pretoria awards recognising his contribution to community engagement and innovative teaching, including Education Innovation and Teaching & Learning awards.

  1. PMI (Project Management Institute) – USA and Globally
  2. ECSA (Engineering Council of SA)
  3. SACPCMP (South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions)
  4. SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professionals)
  5. PMSA (Project Management South Africa)

On successful completion of the PPM, suitable candidates may be eligible to apply for the professional designation of Project Manager (PM) conferred by Project Management South Africa (PMSA). PMSA is the SAQA recognized professional body representing the interests of project managers across sectors.
