The Relationship Between Project Management Maturity And Project Success

Abstract
With increasing ‘projectification’ of organizations, the relationship between project management maturity and project success is likely to become more pertinent. However, consensus on this relationship is lacking. This paper investigates the relationship between project management maturity levels and project success. Purposive sampling was used to distribute an online, structured questionnaire and, for economic reasons, it was decided to stop the survey when 600 responses were received. Descriptive statistics and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used to test the hypothesis that higher project management maturity levels increase the likelihood of project success. The perceived project success of 9’389 projects and the project management maturity of the organizations involved were determined and the findings supported the hypothesis. This paper therefore contributes to the scarce literature on the relationship between project management maturity and project success.
