The Programme In Project Management Of UP

20 July 2019

Prof Herman Steyn is known for advising people that, if they can find a better course to develop project management skills than the PPM (Programme in Project Management) of the University of Pretoria, they should enrol on it.

The PPM was established in 1997 and is revised regularly to keep up with the latest developments in the field. It is the project management course of choice of several organizations and has been presented in-house at several companies. It has, for example, been presented 9 times in-house at Group Five Ltd.  In total, more than 8000 people have done this course since 1997. The PPM is therefore well known by employers and adds value on the CVs of professionals.

The PPM is a product of the Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) of the University of Pretoria – the leading institution in Project Management in the country. The GSTM also offers the only master’s degree course in Project Management on the African Continent that is accredited by the Global Accreditation Center of the PMI (Project Management Institute).

The lecturers on the PPM are to a large extent the same ones that teach this leading master’s programme.  In addition to extensive practical experience in the industry, all lecturers also have excellent academic credentials.  With several PhD graduates and several current PhD studies, the GSTM leads in project management research.  The quality of the PPM is therefore undisputed.

Successful candidates obtain the PPM certificate from the University of Pretoria.

In addition, the PPM is recognized by the following:

  • PMI(Project Management Institute) – USA
  • ECSA(Engineering Council of SA) – 5 CPD points
  • SACPCMP(South African Council for the Project and Construction. Management Professions) – 96 CPD points
  • PMSA(Project Management South Africa).

T’s & C’s apply.  More details on the website below.

People enrolled on the PPM apply the principles and techniques in their workplace by doing practical assignments in their specific work situations. Work done on the PPM is therefore practical and of value to both employees and employers.

The PPM consists of 8 modules. To accommodate the needs of a variety of people, the following modes of presentation are available:

  • The traditional 20-day course, presented in 4 blocks of 5 days each;
  • The Weekender presentation on 8 Fridays and 8 Saturdays;
  • Online modules: Three of the 8 modules are available online. The cost of doing the first module online is a mere R7324.70 (all inclusive).
